Introduction

The drainage channel system plays a crucial role in regulating the flow of water on the ground, preventing stagnation, especially during high rainfall. Rebuilding the drainage system is a vital step in overcoming the problem of inadequate drainage channels accommodating excess water discharge. This issue often arises due to high rainfall exceeding the drainage channel capacity, leading to flooding. Therefore, the evaluation of rebuilding the drainage system in the Amplas toll gate area, Medan City, is essential to prevent the recurrence of flooding in the region.

Background and Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of rebuilding the drainage system in the Amplas toll gate area. Through this evaluation, it is hoped that the right solution can be found in preventing flooding. This study utilizes two types of data: primary and secondary data. Primary data is obtained through surveys at the location, which includes information about existing drainage channels. Meanwhile, secondary data in the form of maximum daily rainfall information during the period January 2012 to December 2021 was taken from the BMKG region I Medan Station, located in Deli Serdang Regency.

Methodology

In analyzing rainfall data, this study uses the Pearson III log method. This method was chosen because the coefficient of bcelery (CS) is not the same as zero, so that it meets the requirements for analysis. Based on the calculation results, the Rainfall Intensity Value (I) was 219,329 mm/hour with a two-year repellent period. From the primary channel review in the Amplas toll gate area, the planned discharge value (QR) was 0.0005 m³/s, while the existing channel capacity (QS) was recorded at 1,172 m³/sec.

Results and Discussion

From the results of the analysis, it was concluded that the primary drainage channel in the Amplas toll gate section was not the main cause of flooding. Conversely, the main factor causing floods in this area is inundation or swamps around the area. In addition, mud sedimentation and buildup of waste in the secondary and tertiary drainage channels also worsen the condition, thus contributing to the problem of floods that occurred in the Amplas toll road in Medan City.

Conclusion and Recommendations

From this evaluation, it is essential for related parties to take more comprehensive improvement actions. One step that can be taken is to carry out routine maintenance on the drainage channel to ensure there are no blockages due to mud and waste. In addition, it is necessary to improve and normalize the inundation area to prevent the accumulation of water during rain. Thus, it is hoped that the Amplas toll gate area can avoid flood problems that have been troubling the community.

Implications and Future Directions

Through this in-depth assessment, it is expected to provide valuable input for policy makers and all parties involved in infrastructure planning and development, in order to create a safer and more comfortable environment for the people of Medan City. The findings of this study can be used as a reference for future studies and can contribute to the development of more effective flood prevention strategies in the region.
