With more than 24 water collection points in 24 hours, and the presence of other companies such as PT. Aqua Danone, which operates upstream, this has caused concern about the impact of exploration on the sustainability of groundwater sources, which has the potential to cause a lack of clean water for around 4.2 million people each year.

Groundwater Infiltration Zoning for Water Resource Protection

This study aims to analyze groundwater infiltration zoning for the protection of water resources in the Sibolangit area. Descriptive methods are used to collect data factually in the field, with purposive sampling sampling techniques that ensure the location taken is an area that contributes to water catchment. Samples are taken from 10 points by considering the uniformity of geological maps, soil types, topography, hydrogeology, land systems, and land cover on a scale of 1: 50,000.

Methodology

Data Collection and Analysis

The results showed that the topographic, geological, and hydrogeological factors had a significant effect on determining the water catchment zone. Meanwhile, other factors such as infiltration, permeability, bulk density, rainfall, and land management also contribute to the quantity of water catchment areas. For example, the infiltration value ranging from 9.93 - 14.16 cm/hour indicates that the water infiltration process is very good. In addition, percolation with a value between 2.35 - 3.43 cm/hour also shows a good level after observation for one hour in the field.

Results

Laboratory Testing and Landsat Map Analysis

Laboratory testing further revealed that the permeability value ranges from 0.35 - 20.54 cm/hour indicating permeability that varies from medium to good, while the bulk density is measured between 0.37 - 0.82 gr/cm³ indicates an optimal density for support water catchment. Rainfall data obtained ranges from 1,857 - 4,243.5 mm/year reflects a high enough rainy level, which is an important factor in the water catchment process.

Landsat map analysis also revealed that land cover conditions and land management are currently still in the good category. This is a supporting factor for the sustainability of water resources in the region, although sustainable management challenges must continue to be faced.
