Introduction

Disaster or disaster is an event or a series of events that threaten and interfere with the lives and livelihoods of the people. This can be caused by natural factors and non-natural factors that have an impact on loss of life, environmental damage, property losses, and psychological impacts. All of this causes a deeper process of poverty for people affected by disasters. Therefore, the people of Mardingding Village need to formulate an effective survival strategy in the midst of this difficult condition.

Background of the Study

The eruption of Mount Sinabung has been a recurring issue in the Karo community, especially in Mardingding Village, since 2010. The community has been forced to live in a peren refugee post in Tiganderket District, Karo Regency due to the eruption. Methodology

This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, which aims to describe the phenomena and objects under study. The focus of this research is to find out and explain the survival strategy of the people of Mardingding Village who are victims of the eruption of Mount Sinabung at the Perren refugee post. The study was conducted by involving six respondents at the refugee location. Data collection methods include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis is carried out qualitatively, without requiring statistical testing.

Results

The results showed that there were three survival strategies implemented by the Mardingding village community, namely active strategies, passive strategies, and network strategies.

Active Strategy

The community takes the initiative to find side jobs, increase working hours, and involve family members, especially wives, in earning a living. This shows that the community is trying hard to maximize the potential that exists in limited conditions.
