Mapping of Forest Fire-Prone Areas in North Sumatra Province Based on TRMM Satellite Data

Introduction

Forest fires are one of the most devastating environmental disasters in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. With a high fire risk index, it is crucial to create a potential map of forest fire risk as a tool for monitoring and adjusting the impact of the disaster. One approach in making this map is to calculate the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI). Although the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has developed a map of potential fires based on KBDI, the lack of rain observation stations has an impact on the accuracy of the resulting map.

To overcome this problem, the mapping of forest fire-prone areas in North Sumatra is carried out by utilizing TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) satellite data. This study uses daily rainfall data from BMKG Station and data from TRMM satellites that include periods of 2009 to 2012. In addition to rainfall data, research also relies on the daily maximum temperature data from BMKG station, elevation data, and hotspots (hotspots) from Aqua satellites /Terra. Estimated rainfall is carried out using a linear regression equation that connects rainfall data that is observed with rainfall data from TRMM satellites. The results of this estimation are then used to calculate KBDI and map the results spatially using ARC GIS software version 10.0.

Methodology

The methodology used in this study involves several steps:

Data Collection: Daily rainfall data from BMKG Station and data from TRMM satellites that include periods of 2009 to 2012 were collected. In addition to rainfall data, research also relies on the daily maximum temperature data from BMKG station, elevation data, and hotspots (hotspots) from Aqua satellites /Terra.
Data Estimation: Estimated rainfall is carried out using a linear regression equation that connects rainfall data that is observed with rainfall data from TRMM satellites.
KBDI Calculation: The results of the estimation are then used to calculate KBDI.
Spatial Mapping: The results of the KBDI calculation are then mapped spatially using ARC GIS software version 10.0.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between rainfall data that was observed with data from TRMM satellites, especially in the east coast of North Sumatra. This correlation shows a positive trend during wet months such as March, April, May, August and December. The KBDI map validation conducted using hotspot data from the Aqua/Terra satellite shows that 66% of the hotspots are in areas that have high KBDI values. This proves that the potential map of fire risk-based TRMM can be used as an alternative tool to monitor forest fires in North Sumatra Province.

Discussion

Mapping areas prone to satellite data-based forest fires offer several advantages. First, the use of satellite technology allows broader coverage and more accurate data than direct observations from the station. In addition, satellite data analysis can be done in real-time, so that information about the potential for fire can be obtained quickly.

The application of KBDI as an indicator of the risk of forest fires is very important because it reflects the condition of soil moisture and vegetation. High KBDI shows that the land is in dry condition and has the potential to increase the risk of fire. By utilizing TRMM data, which provides more complete rainfall information, the resulting map can be more accurate in describing fire-prone areas.

Conclusion

The use of satellite technology in mapping the risk of forest fires in North Sumatra is an innovative step that can increase the effectiveness of forest fire management. With proper data support and careful analysis, we can reduce the impact of forest fire disasters and protect the environment and life of the surrounding community.
