Knowledge, Attitudes, and Actions of the Fishing Community about the Risk of Hypertension in Pulau Simardan Village, Datuk Bandar Timur District, Tanjung Balai City

Introduction

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a medical condition that affects more than one billion people worldwide. Two-thirds of these numbers are in developing countries, including Indonesia. In Simardan Island Village, Datuk Bandar Timur District, Tanjung Balai City, the study was conducted to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and actions of the fishing community related to the risk of hypertension. This study applies a quantitative descriptive research design by involving 66 respondents chosen through probability sampling techniques. Data is collected through a questionnaire that includes demographic information, knowledge, attitudes, and actions of the community.

Background of the Study

Hypertension is a major public health concern in many parts of the world, including Indonesia. It is estimated that more than 30% of the Indonesian population suffers from hypertension, which is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney disease. In Simardan Island Village, the fishing community is particularly vulnerable to hypertension due to their lifestyle and occupation. Fishermen are often exposed to physical stress, poor diet, and lack of physical activity, which can increase their risk of developing hypertension.

Methodology

This study uses a quantitative descriptive research design to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and actions of the fishing community related to the risk of hypertension. The study involves 66 respondents chosen through probability sampling techniques. Data is collected through a questionnaire that includes demographic information, knowledge, attitudes, and actions of the community. The questionnaire is designed to assess the respondents' knowledge about hypertension, their attitudes towards prevention and handling of hypertension, and their actions to prevent hypertension.

Results

The results of the study show that the majority of fishing communities in Simardan Island Village have a good understanding of hypertension. As many as 40 people (60.8%) of respondents showed good knowledge, while 26 people (39.2%) had less knowledge. In terms of attitude, 60 people (90.9%) show a good attitude towards the prevention and handling of hypertension, while 6 people (9.1%) are in the category of poor attitudes. The actions of fishermen also show positive results, where 47 people (71.2%) have good precautions, while 19 people (28.8%) are still lacking in these actions.

Discussion

The results of the study indicate that the awareness of fishermen's community towards hypertension is quite high. Good knowledge contributes to better preventive attitudes and actions. This shows the importance of continuous health education programs to increase knowledge about hypertension, especially in vulnerable areas such as Simardan Island Village. Increased knowledge and positive attitude is expected to play a role in preventing the incidence of hypertension among the fishing community.

Conclusion

The study concludes that the awareness of fishermen's community towards hypertension is quite high. Good knowledge contributes to better preventive attitudes and actions. This shows the importance of continuous health education programs to increase knowledge about hypertension, especially in vulnerable areas such as Simardan Island Village. The results of this study can also be a reference for the government and health institutions to design relevant health programs and in accordance with the needs of the fishing community.

Recommendations

Based on the results of the study, the following recommendations are made:

Continuous Health Education Programs: Continuous health education programs should be implemented to increase knowledge about hypertension among the fishing community.
Health Promotion Programs: Health promotion programs should be designed to promote healthy lifestyle and behavior among the fishing community.
Community-Based Health Services: Community-based health services should be provided to the fishing community to provide access to healthcare services.
Collaboration with Government and Health Institutions: Collaboration with government and health institutions is necessary to design relevant health programs and in accordance with the needs of the fishing community.
