Introduction

In today's fast-paced world, adolescents are constantly faced with various temptations that can lead to negative behavior, one of which is drug abuse. The problem of drug abuse among adolescents is a significant concern for parents, educators, and policymakers. In Muhammadiyah 2 Medan High School, research has shown that family support, especially from parents, plays a crucial role in preventing teenagers from falling into the problem. This support not only helps adolescents develop mature personalities but also gives them mental power to deal with various problems that might arise.

The Importance of Family Support

Family support is essential for adolescents in preventing drug abuse. Research has shown that adolescents who receive emotional support from their families are less likely to engage in drug abuse. Emotional support includes providing a sense of security, love, and acceptance, which helps adolescents develop a positive self-image and build resilience against negative influences. In addition, information support is also crucial, as it provides adolescents with knowledge about the dangers of drugs and helps them make informed decisions.

Methodology

This study used a descriptive research design to explore the level of family support given to adolescents in preventing drug abuse. The population consisted of 491 students, and a sample of 148 students was taken through stratified random sampling techniques. The instruments used in this study included demographic questionnaires and questionnaires that measured family support, which were divided into four categories: emotional support, information, instrumental, and hope.

Results

The data collected in September 2016 showed very positive results. Emotional support received by adolescents was at 95.3%, showing that almost all teenagers felt emotionally supported by their families. In addition, information support reached 98.0%, which means the family played an active role in providing knowledge about the dangers of drugs. Instrumental support was also no less important, with the figure of 83.1%, showing that the family provided the resources needed to prevent drug abuse. Finally, the support of hope got 93.2%, which showed strong expectations from the family for a better future for teenagers.

Conclusion

The results of this study provide the conclusion that family support for adolescents in preventing drug abuse is in a good category. With high support, teenagers are more likely to deal with and reject drug temptations. However, this study also suggested that further research be carried out to identify other factors that could cause adolescents to be involved in drug abuse.
