Introduction

The use of bamboo as a substitute for coarse aggregate in concrete mixture has become one of the innovations in an effort to reduce the specific gravity of concrete, especially in mild concrete production. Bamboo, which is an organic material, has the main composition of glucose and fiber (cellulose) that are similar to wood. Although the presence of bamboo fiber can provide additional benefits to concrete, there are consequences that must be considered, namely a decrease in compressive strength and pulling concrete itself. This study aims to explore how much the influence of bamboo substitution on concrete mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, tensile strength, elasticity, absorption, and concrete specific gravity.

Materials and Methods

The bamboo material used in this study has a size between 15-20 mm, with the type of bamboo chosen is bamboo betung (dendrocalamus asper). In this experiment, variations in the addition of betung bamboo were carried out at 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of the weight of coarse aggregate. Research samples analyzed cylindrical shaped with a diameter of 15 cm and a height of 30 cm.

Results and Discussion

The test results show that the addition of the percentage of bamboo substitution will reduce the slump value in the concrete mixture. This phenomenon indicates that concrete is absorbing water, which is indicated by an increase in water absorption in concrete specimens reaching 1.66%. In addition, a decrease also occurs in specific gravity, compressive strength, tensile strength, and concrete elasticity. The average minimum concrete specific gravity with bamboo substitution was recorded at 2086.18 kg/m³ in a variation of 80%, while the maximum was recorded at 2307.46 kg/m³ in a 20% variation.

In terms of compressive strength, the maximum value was recorded at 17.08 MPa in the 20% substitution, while the minimum value was recorded at 5.81 MPa in the 80% variation. The maximum tensile strength also shows comparable results, which is 1.48 MPa at 20% substitution, and a minimum of 0.75 MPa in 80% substitution. Modulus of the average normal concrete elasticity is recorded at 63,046 MPa, while for 80% bamboo substitution, the value decreases to 9,812 MPa. This shows that a decrease in concrete compressive strength is in line with the use of higher bamboo substitution.

Analysis and Conclusion

In this analysis, it is important to realize that concrete with low compressive strength will trigger greater longitudinal strain, which in turn decreases the modulus of elasticity. Conversely, when the compressive strength increases, the modulus of elasticity will also increase. Therefore, the use of bamboo as a coarse aggregate in lightweight concrete presents trade-offs that need to be considered in practical applications. Although the use of bamboo has the potential to provide advantages in reducing weight, negative effects on concrete mechanical properties must be anticipated, especially in applications that require high strength.

Implications and Future Research Directions

Thus, this research provides important insights for engineers and researchers in efforts to develop building materials that are more environmentally friendly and efficient, while still paying attention to the quality and safety of the structure produced. The use of bamboo as a coarse aggregate in mild concrete needs to be further analyzed to find optimal proportions that can produce concrete with adequate mechanical performance.
