Biodiesel Synthesis from Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized Palm Oil (RBDPO) Using a Co-Solvent Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES)

Introduction

The development of environmentally friendly solvent technology has gained significant attention in the field of chemistry. One such technology is the use of Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES), which has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional solvents. DES is a mixture of salt and donor compounds that form hydrogen bonds, making it non-toxic, non-reactive, biodegradable, and easy to synthesize with high purity. In this study, we explore the use of DES as a co-solvent in biodiesel synthesis from refined, bleached, and deodorized palm oil (RBDPO).

Background

Biodiesel is a renewable and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, produced from vegetable oils or animal fats through a process called transesterification. RBDPO is a common feedstock for biodiesel production due to its high oil content and relatively low cost. However, the transesterification process can be challenging, and the use of traditional solvents can have negative environmental impacts. DES, on the other hand, has been shown to be an effective and environmentally friendly solvent for various chemical reactions.

Methodology

In this study, we used two different DES compositions: CHCL/D-Glucose and CHCL/Ethylene Glycol, with a molar ratio of 2:1 and 1:2, respectively. These DES compositions were used as co-solvents in biodiesel synthesis from RBDPO. The transesterification reaction was carried out using a fixed amount of RBDPO, methanol, and catalyst, with varying concentrations of DES (0%, 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%). The biodiesel yield was analyzed using gas chromatography (GC).

Results

The results showed that the addition of DES as a co-solvent in biodiesel synthesis from RBDPO can reduce the biodiesel yield. For DES based on CHCL/D-Glucose, the biodiesel yield decreased from 92.79% to 11.05% with increasing DES concentration. Similarly, for DES based on CHCL/Ethylene Glycol, the biodiesel yield decreased from 91.24% to 80.79% with increasing DES concentration.

Discussion

The results suggest that DES based on CHCL/D-Glucose is not suitable for use as a co-solvent in biodiesel synthesis due to its high freezing point, density, and viscosity, which can reduce the solubility of methanol and oil, leading to lower biodiesel yields. On the other hand, DES based on CHCL/Ethylene Glycol has better characteristics, but its strong hydrogen bonds can inhibit the formation of methoxide in the transesterification reaction, resulting in lower biodiesel yields.

Importance of DES Selection

The selection of DES for biodiesel synthesis is crucial due to several factors. First, the physical properties of DES, such as freezing points, density, and viscosity, can affect the solubility of methanol and oil, which can impact the transesterification process. Second, the strength of hydrogen bonds in DES can inhibit the formation of methoxide, an essential reactant in the transesterification reaction. Third, high solubility of DES can bind methanol in the reaction, reducing biodiesel yields.
