The Effectiveness of the Use of Various Traps with Different Heights to Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephridate) in Citrus Plants

Fruit fly pest attacks, particularly the BactoCera Dorsalis species, pose a significant challenge to increasing the production and quality of citrus fruits in the Karo region of Indonesia. Approximately 75% of the total crop plantations can be affected by these pest attacks, with high populations reaching an intensity of 100%. This situation necessitates the need for more effective pest control efforts to citrus plants in the area.

Background and Research Methodology

This research was conducted in Tongkoh 3 Panah Village, Berastagi District, Karo Regency, to test the effectiveness of various traps in controlling fruit flies in citrus plants. The method used was a factorial random group design (shelf) with three treatment factors and three replications. The treatment tested included a mixture of methyl eugenol and cocoa waste, variations in the colors of traps (yellow and orange), and the height of the trap installed (90 cm, 100 cm, and 110 cm), in addition to a control treatment.

The results showed that only one type of fruit fly was trapped, namely BactoCera Dorsalis Hendel. Another striking finding was the use of traps with yellow, mixed with methyl eugenol and cocoa waste, at an altitude of 100 cm successfully attracting the most fruit flies. In observing the genital ratio, 1,094 male fruit flies were found and 210 females. In addition, other insect populations were also detected from the order of Coleoptera and Diptera, with a total of 46 catch.
