Introduction

The increasing concern about environmental pollution and the need for sustainable materials have led to the development of biodegradable composites. One of the promising materials for this purpose is α-cellulose from sugarcane, which can be combined with polypropylene to create a biodegradable composite. In this study, we investigated the manufacture of biodegradable composites from α-cellulose sugarcane and polypropylene using polypropylene rolled maleic anhydride and divinil benzene as a cross-binding agent.

Process of Making and Separation

The first stage of the manufacturing process involves the degradation of polypropylene using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) in an internal mixer with a ratio of 90:10 (wt%). This degraded polypropylene is then grafted with maleic anhydride (MA) with a polypropylene (PP): MA: BPO ratio of 92:6:2 (wt%). The grafting results are then purified through reflux with xylene. This process is crucial in creating a cross-linking agent that will bind the α-cellulose and polypropylene together.

In the second stage, α-cellulose is isolated from sugarcane pulp using the Okhamafe method. This separation process involves immersing sugarcane pulp in a 3.5% nitric acid solution, followed by bleaching using sodium hypochlorite 1.75% and 17.5%, and purification with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The results showed that the composite with a composition of PP: α-cellulose: PP-G-MA: BPO: DVB (95:5:0.5:0.5:1:1) has the best properties, according to SNI 7188.7:2011. The composite has a tensile strength value of 50.031 N/m² and low water absorption, which is 0.791%. In addition, the morphological characteristics show a flat surface and strong interactions between groups, and have good biodegradity capabilities.

This study underlines the potential for the use of sugarcane pulp as a source of α-cellulose in the manufacture of environmentally friendly composites. With the right combination of technology, it is expected that this composite can replace plastic-based materials that are difficult to decompose, in line with the need to reduce plastic waste in our environment.
