The acquisition of English as a second language (ESL) is a crucial aspect of early childhood education. In Indonesia, where English is not the primary language spoken, it is essential to introduce ESL to kindergarten children to prepare them for a globalized world. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of the audio-visual method in increasing student vocabulary in TK Al-Ikhlas Marindal I Medan, a kindergarten in Medan, Indonesia.

The study involved 40 students from TK Al-Ikhlas Marindal I Medan, who were divided into four groups. Each group received a different type of instruction: audio-visual, visual, auditory, and control. The audio-visual group received instruction that combined visual and auditory elements, while the visual and auditory groups received instruction that focused on either visual or auditory elements, respectively. The control group did not receive any instruction.

Results

The results of this study showed that the use of audio-visual media had a significant impact on students' understanding. Of the total 40 students involved, as many as 70% or 28 students can correctly answer the material about "animals". Furthermore, for the "number" material, the presentation of students who answered correctly reached 92.5%, namely 37 students. In "fruits", 67.5% or 27 students can answer precisely, and for "color" material, the same presentation is 70%, namely 28 students.

The results of this study underline the effectiveness of the audio-visual method in increasing student vocabulary. Several factors contribute to this success. First, audio-visual media attract children's attention and make the learning process more enjoyable. In the context of early childhood, learning involving visual and audio elements can help them understand the material better because children are more likely to learn through observation and hearing.

Second, the use of audio-visual media also allows students to learn interactively. Children not only sit and listen, but they can see pictures, hear sounds, and participate in activities involving movements. This optimizes their learning experience and helps strengthen the memory of the taught vocabulary.

In conclusion, this research confirms that the use of audio-visual methods is very effective in increasing student vocabulary in TK Al-Ikhlas Marindal I Medan. Therefore, it is essential for educational institutions to continue to explore and utilize appropriate learning media to maximize children's learning potential.
