Introduction

Silicon Soft Denture Lining (SDL) has become a popular choice in making the base of Heat Polymerization Resin dentures (RAPP) due to its soft properties and high biocompatibility. However, one of the main obstacles of silicone soft denture lining is its low adhesion on the RAPP base. This study aims to determine the effect of several surface treatment methods on the adhesion between silicon soft denture lining, both autopolymerized and heatpolymerized, on the base of the denture of heat polymerization resins.

Background

Silicon Soft Denture Lining (SDL) has been widely used in dentistry due to its advantages, such as soft properties and high biocompatibility. The use of this material is very useful, especially for patients with palatal defects that have many undercut tissue. However, one of the main obstacles of silicone soft denture lining is its low adhesion on the RAPP base. This can lead to a poor fit and increased risk of denture failure. Methodology

In this study, laboratory experiments with 40 samples were divided into two groups. Each group consists of 20 samples, one group for Silicon SDL material produced from the autopolymerized (mollosil) process and one for SDL silicon from the Heatpolymerized (Molloplast) process. Each sample group is further divided into four treatments, namely without surface treatment as a control and three types of treatment with surface treatment: sandblast, primary adhesive, and a combination of adhesive sandblast-primers. Measurement of sticky strength is done using a universal testing machine (UTM) with a speed of 5 mm/minute. The results of this measurement are then correlated by the morphological picture of the surface of the RAPP base analyzed using an Electron Microscope (SEM) scanning.

Analysis

Analysis of the adhesion between the two types of Silicon Soft Denture Lining is carried out using the T test, while the influence of the surface treatment on the adhesion is analyzed by the one-way ANOVA test. Furthermore, the comparison of the influence between groups was tested using the LSD test. The t test results show that there is a significant difference in the adhesion between silicon SDL Autopolymerized and Heatpolymerized, both in groups that do not experience treatment or those who get treatment such as sandblasts and primary adhesive. The results of the ANOVA test also showed the positive influence of all types of surface treatment on the adhesion of the two types of Silicon SDL.

Results

From further analysis, it appears that all types of surface treatment contribute to increasing the adhesion of the two Silicon SDL materials. However, the use of primary adhesive is indicated as the most effective method, with the best results on Autopolymerized Silicon SDL which reaches 0.815 ± 0.053 MPa and in the Heatpolymerized Silicon SDL which records a value of 2,115 ± 0.330 MPa.

The results of this study confirm the importance of the application of Surface Treatment as an effective way to increase the adhesion of Silicon Soft Denture Lining on the base of acrylic resin dentures. The use of primary adhesive is indicated as the most effective method, with the best results on Autopolymerized Silicon SDL and Heatpolymerized Silicon SDL.
