Attitudes and Adoption Levels of Coffee Farmers to Arabica Coffee Cultivation Technology Using a Shade (Case: In Pematang Sidamanik District, Simalungun Regency)

Introduction

The cultivation of Arabica coffee is a significant industry in many parts of the world, including Indonesia. However, the productivity of Arabica coffee in Pematang Sidamanik District, Simalungun Regency, is still relatively low. In an effort to increase productivity, the Simalungun Regency Government through the Agriculture Office has made various efforts, including providing counseling and inviting Arabica coffee farmers to conduct comparative studies to locations that have implemented Arabica coffee cultivation techniques using a shade. Despite these efforts, coffee farmers in this region have not fully adopted the cultivation method. This study aims to analyze the attitudes and adoption levels of coffee farmers to Arabica coffee cultivation technology using a shade in Pematang Sidamanik District, Simalungun Regency.

The Importance of Shade in Coffee Cultivation

Shade is an essential component of coffee cultivation, as it provides a favorable environment for coffee plants to grow. The use of shade can have a positive impact on coffee yields, as it helps to regulate temperature, maintain soil moisture, and reduce soil erosion. In this study, the technical differences between Arabica coffee cultivation that uses shade and those that do not were analyzed. The results showed that although the cultivation technique was not much different technically, the productivity of Arabica coffee planted using shade was higher than the shade, with a significant difference.

Farmers' Attitudes and Knowledge

Farmers' attitudes towards the cultivation of Arabica coffee with shade were found to be positive in this study. A good attitude can affect the level of adoption of new technology, and in this case, it is essential for the successful implementation of shade-based coffee cultivation. In addition, the level of knowledge of farmers about Arabica coffee cultivation with shade was also relatively high. Good knowledge greatly contributes to the correct understanding of techniques in coffee cultivation, which in turn can increase productivity.

Technology Adoption Level

Although farmers' attitudes and knowledge of Arabica coffee cultivation techniques with positive shade, the level of adoption that looks still classified as moderate. This indicates the gap between knowledge and practice applied in the field. This study found that there was no significant relationship between farmers' attitudes and their adoption rates. Likewise, the level of knowledge of farmers is not significantly related to the level of adoption. This shows that even though farmers understand and have a positive attitude, other factors may play a role in their decision to adopt new technology.

Relationship of Adoption with Productivity

Furthermore, this study also analyzed the relationship between the level of farmers' adoption of the productivity of Arabica coffee cultivation. The results show that the level of adoption of farmers who have planted shade is not significantly related to productivity. This indicates that other factors, perhaps such as climate, plant maintenance, or soil conditions, also greatly affect yields.

Factors Affecting Adoption

Several factors can affect the adoption of new technology, including farmers' attitudes, knowledge, and access to resources. In this study, it was found that farmers' attitudes and knowledge were not significantly related to their adoption rates. This suggests that other factors, such as access to resources, market information, and social networks, may play a more significant role in the adoption of new technology.

Conclusion and Suggestions

Overall, the results of this study provide useful insights about the attitudes and levels of coffee farmers' adoption towards cultivation technology using shade. Although there is high awareness and knowledge, as well as a positive attitude towards this technique, there are still challenges in the application that must be overcome. Therefore, it is essential for the government and related institutions to continue to provide support, such as more intensive training, incentives, and access to the resources needed to facilitate the adoption of better coffee farming technology. This is expected to increase the productivity of Arabica coffee in Pematang Sidamanik District and have a positive impact on the welfare of farmers.

Recommendations for Future Research

This study provides a foundation for future research on the adoption of new technology in coffee farming. Future studies can explore the role of social networks, market information, and access to resources in the adoption of new technology. Additionally, the study can investigate the impact of climate change on coffee yields and the effectiveness of different cultivation techniques in different regions.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations, including the small sample size and the limited scope of the study. Future studies can address these limitations by increasing the sample size and exploring the adoption of new technology in different regions.

Implications for Policy and Practice

The results of this study have implications for policy and practice in the coffee industry. The study highlights the importance of providing support to farmers, including training, incentives, and access to resources, to facilitate the adoption of better coffee farming technology. Additionally, the study suggests that the government and related institutions should continue to provide support to farmers to increase the productivity of Arabica coffee in Pematang Sidamanik District and have a positive impact on the welfare of farmers.
