Introduction

Dental caries is one of the most common oral health problems, especially in children. This disease is multifactorial, meaning that there are several factors that interact with each other in the process of caries. These factors include hosts (individuals), substrates (food), bacteria, and time. Among the various bacteria involved, Streptococcus mutans is recognized as the main cause in the initiation and development of caries. Therefore, it is essential to make prevention efforts by controlling the accumulation of plaque, which is a place for this bacterium to multiply.

In recent years, the concept of using probiotics containing good bacteria has become increasingly popular in medical research. Probiotics have been proven to provide various health benefits, including oral health. This study aims to evaluate the comparison of the effectiveness of the mouth of the probiotic solution and green tea in reducing the accumulation of plaque and the number of Streptococcus mutans in children aged 12-15 years at the Sos Children’s Village Foundation Medan.

Methodology

This study uses an experimental quasi research design with the Pre and Post-Test Control Group approach. The number of samples used is 30 children selected through purposive sampling technique. To evaluate plaque accumulation, researchers use the LOE & Sillness index. In addition, the examination of the number of Streptococcus mutans in saliva is carried out in the laboratory using TYCSB media and the Colony Counter. Data analysis was carried out by paired T test and one way ANOVA with a meaningful value specified on P <0.05.

Results

The results of statistical analysis show a significant difference in the average accumulation of plaque and the number of Streptococcus mutans between groups that rinse with probiotic solutions, green tea, and distilled water. With the value of P = 0.05, this study concluded that rinse with a probiotic solution is more effective than grinning with green tea in reducing plaque accumulation and the number of Streptococcus mutans.

Discussion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the use of probiotic solutions as part of oral hygiene can provide more benefits for children's dental health, compared to the use of green tea. This shows that a new approach in oral health care can be a more effective alternative in preventing caries, especially among children. Preventive efforts through the use of probiotics need to be considered and further developed, given the potential it has to improve dental and oral health.
